Belle

Belle was a ewe in a farmers flock destined for a life as a production ewe.

Belle and her two new born boys had their life changed thanks to the kindness of the Saint Beans global community. When a photo of one of her lambs was shared, people insisted that they come and live with Beans, Frosty, Fanta and Flora.

At first the answer was no from the farmer but the Saint Beans community insisted and they donated to the ‘Save the Lambs’ campaign so we could buy them whatever the cost.

It wasn’t easy because the farmer wasn’t obliging but in the end an agreement was forged and Belle and her two boys came to Saint Beans. We had to pay quite a lot but it was worth it.

Belle's New Life

Belle didn't know it but her life was changed in an instant thanks to all the donors. Belle was afraid of humans and it took her quite a long time to trust the human that came to visit them everyday. He didn’t think she would ever let him give her wool rubs but then one day she just casually walked up with no hesitation and the look in her eye said “me next please".

From then on Belle demanded wool rubs almost as much as Frosty. She has been a wonderful mother to Homer and Buttons and they are still a close family unit even though the boys are fully grown. If one of them goes out of sight they immediately start to worry and call for each other. Belle has a down to earth personality and never causes a fuss, unfortunately though she does have a serious health issue.

Respiratory Infection

Belle developed a bad respiratory infection and despite her human trying everything the vet has recommended it appears to be chronic and won't go away. It's likely caused by a virus with secondary bacterial infections. The vet has tried all the antibiotics they regularly use on sheep but nothing has worked. This effects her breathing quite severely but she perseveres and is in good health otherwise.

If there are any veterinarians or researchers who specialise in sheep respiratory infections please get in touch. We would love to get rid of it or manage it better because it must be uncomfortable and really restricts her breathing which is hard for sheep because they dislike mouth breathing.

It’s quite amazing to see how much Belle has changed. When she was afraid of her human it was difficult to see her personality because she was distant and on guard. As soon as she decided to trust him however suddenly she completely changed and her personality shone through.

Belle is very stoic and doesn't let her health issue get her down at all, she's always in good spirts and demands wool rubs constantly.
